ANEW Clinical Eye Lift Review by Donna Perry

This review was submitted by Donna Perry, who is a beauty/make-up blogger and an independent Avon representative.

————————————————————————————————

I am using this product daily morning and night. I love the unique two part system. It is an upper eye gel and an under eye cream.

Creams do not work when applied to your upper eye lid, the cream always manages to get inside your eye and that’s irritating, also not good for your eye. The Clinical eye gel stays were you put it… while giving an instant eye lift.

Part two, the eye cream, visibly reduces under eye shadowing and puffiness. I am seeing a triple lift of my under brows, eye lids and under eye. With a regular price of $28 and an on sale price of $20, this is a very low price to pay when you see the results you receive from this product! If you want an instant eye lift without surgery, I definitely recommend this ANEW Clinical Eye Lift from AVON.

Kylie Minogue Darling: Perfume Review

About a year ago, my mom bought me a bottle of Kylie Minogue Darling perfume. The best thing about it is that it lasted me almost the whole year, even though I was using it frequently.

Image found on the Internet and assumed to be public domain

Personally, I like the way it smells because the smell is noticeable but at the same time it is not too strong. I am not a fan of perfumes that smell so strong that you have to wonder if the person wearing it didn’t just pour the whole bottle of it onto themselves. Subtle-smelling perfumes such as the Kylie Minogue Darling are great for everyday wear.

If I had to compare Kylie Minogue Darling to Fantasy By Britney Spears , Kylie Minogue wins hands down. I found Fantasy By Britney Spears too strong for my liking.

I believe that Kylie’s perfume is appropriately priced for the value that the buyer would be getting.

Review of Tim Gunn’s "Life’s Little Lessons for Making it Work"

A few days ago, I finished reading Gunn’s Golden Rules: Life’s Little Lessons for Making It Work”. Usually, I take longer than 1 week to finish a book, but this one, I just couldn’t put down. Tim’s stories are very interesting and the way he presents the lessons is entertaining, to say the least.

Tim Gunn’s story is very inspiring because he came from a humble background and never thought that he would ever be a media person of any kind. However, his people skills, dedication and passion have put him into the position of co-host for reality TV show Project Runway, where he mentors aspiring designers. According to the book, Heidi Klum loves working with Mr. Gunn because he always has excellent advice to offer.

Tim did not start out as a well-spoken gentleman. In fact, in the book, he states that he “was a classic nerd with a terrible stutter” and was “teased and taunted at school”(pg. 13).

He lives with the philosophy that you do not need to be nasty and disrespectful to people in order to get what you want and climb up the ladder in whatever career path you choose. In fact, the nicer you are to others, the better they will react to you and your ideas.

Tim also stated that “the world owes you nothing”. It is through hard work, careful planning, and meeting the right people that you get to where you want to be. He frowns upon demanding divas and gives reasons as to why such attitude will not work.

He also doesn’t believe in trying to get famous fast, and frowns upon those who approach him with the hope (and demand) that he will make them the next star. Those who try to get famous fast are doing it for the wrong reason and people will see through that.

Some of my favorite quotes from the book are:

“People who are used to having things done for them don’t often have a strong grasp on how the real world functions.” (pg. 34)

“Even if you are a really selfish person and are only looking out for your own self-interest, you should treat people well.” (pg. 51)

“My suspicion is that cruelty to those you have power over is insecurity, pure and simple.”(pg. 62)

“As anyone who sticks around in an industry for a while knows, the people who have the best careers and the best lives (and often those who do the best work) are not the demanding, screaming, flinging divas” (pg. 63)

“You don’t have to spend a ton of money to look good” (pg.127)

“My advice to them [people]: Try to take your ego out of it. You don’t make it about you and how hard your life is. You have to focus on what needs to get done and find a way to do it, independent of what your ego may be saying about what you deserve or what is beneath you.” (pg. 233)

If I wrote every single quote that I liked in this book, this post would be far too long to read. So I am going to leave it at that.

However, if you want your own copy of Gunn’s Golden Rules: Life’s Little Lessons for Making It Work, you can order it here.

It is a GREAT read, and I hope that you will enjoy it as much as I did!

Weight Training For Dummies the 3rd Edition Review

This review is a guest post submitted by Eschelle Westwood.

————————————————————————————————-

Weight Training For Dummies was a really great source of information for anyone looking to get into the weight training scene. I found that there was great information for EVERYONE even those who have been in the weight training scene already.
Dummies books have always been great at approaching everyone with their humorous, easy access, information.

The book touches on how “all ages…[can] benefit from weight training.” Which I agree with, as long as you are doing it properly and this book definitely tells you how to do that. It shows you the wrong way to do exercises, as well as the RIGHT way.

They go into such detail that they have a chapter dedicated to EACH muscle group and how to work out each properly depending on what you want to achieve. Not to mention they explain the differences between gym training and AT HOME training. Even explaining how to set-up and create your own home gym, what kind of equipment you need AND how to care for it properly! They even went into great detail on the etiquette of the gym, which I think is VERY important. Nothing ruins your gym experience more than inconsiderate member’s right??

The next thing that could ruin your gym experience is the wrong trainer and this book provides the tips you need to know on how to pick the RIGHT trainer for you. If you are familiar with the “dummies”series you would know that they have some great tips, warning, myth busters etc. all-throughout the book to help you REALLY get it! Not to mention they touch on the subject of “liability insurance,” and how important it is to get a trainer that has it.

Another one of the many great point this book tries to make is the importance of healthy living and tracking your exercising! This book shows you in detail how to track what you do daily; one to track your calories burned and two; to ENCOURAGE you to keep going. Writing down all your daily activity is supposed to be a great motivator, when you see your list daily activity list grow it must be nothing more than “awe-striking” when you see exactly what you can do.

This book even manages to inform you and give you a good estimate on where you fitness level SHOULD be depending on the exercise you are partaking in.

Weight Training For Dummies tries to make it IMPOSSIBLE for you to not continue your training by even providing you with great tips and ways to “pack” a gym for vacations, business trips, or even to keep in your car for when you’re at the park with the kids. They even touch on how “De-training” can be really important and harmful to your training, in the sense that once you fall off the horse it is WAY harder to get back on once you stop. I love the no excuse approach to exercise and health, just as they touched on the importance of water. We all know that we need it but not many will drink it!

Like I said in the beginning this book is filled with a plethora of information, so much so that I couldn’t possibly fathom touching on them all here. I really suggest this book; it really managed to make weight training accessible and not nearly so overwhelming. Even shows how ANYONE can weight train, which I greatly commend. I give this book a 5/5! Not easy, but well deserved!

Stila Lip Glaze Set: Review

The following is a review of Stila Lip Glazes submitted by model Augustine York
——————————————————————————————-
Stila Lip Glaze 8 Piece Set
Most of the things I want for gifts are sexy lingerie and other really inappropriate items, so when my someday-mother-in-law asked me what I wanted for Christmas I had to scramble together a small list of things from Sephora. On Christmas day I found underneath my tree the Stila Lip Glaze Set.

The set contains eight lip glaze shades (Kitten, Guava, Grapefruit, Apricot, Seashell, Blush, Majesty, and Merry Merry) in “travel size” .05oz containers and is priced at $25—a steal considering that a buying one individual lip glaze will cost you $22 (though to be fair, the individual tubes are full size at .08oz). So this set is more of a sample, see-what-you-like-best thing, which is perfect for me as a model because I don’t wear them every day—just on shoots—so I like having a range of shades to use.

The lip glazes each come in a tube with a brush attached, and they have a click/turn method of getting the product out which I’m not a huge fan of. It took a really long time turning the base of the applicator before any glaze came out, and when it finally did, it spurted out too much at once and I ended up with a little extra. Not ideal since there isn’t a lot of product to begin with, but a little goes a long way with this lip glaze, so it’s not a deal breaker for me given the low price of the set.

The smell and taste of the gloss is amazing—very fruity but not sickly sweet like some drugstore glosses. I think the term mouthwatering is appropriate. They look good too: I tried out a vibrant red “Merry Merry”—which is an exclusive holiday color—and was surprised at how much pigment was in it. It is certainly a step above drugstore lip gloss that claims to have color but is just lightly tinted. Application was easy: it slides right onto your lips in all its shiny, delicious goodness.

Overall, this set is a good value, but it’s important to note that while Sephora is still selling this particular kit for $25, you can also buy a seven piece kit directly from Stila for $19.99 – you’ll save $5 and still get a good range of shades. While I do like the set, I can’t bring myself to pay full price for one individual glaze; so if you’re looking for an introduction to Stila’s products or just want a little diversity in your make-up kit, get this set and go to town with it!

Harrison Ford: Imperfect Hero…Reflection and review

A couple of days ago, I finished reading the biography of one of the most successful film actors in Hollywood, Harrison Ford. The book was written by Garry Jenkins, an entertainment journalist, who worked very hard to research everything about the actor. Garry Jenkins conducted hundreds of interviews with Harrison’s colleagues, friends, and family. He went above and beyond in describing Harrison’s tough road to success.

I believe that this is a must-read for anyone who would like to pursue acting because this book describes Harrison’s reality as an actor before he was famous. He went from being rejected by his peers at school, to broke actor who couldn’t get representation to one of Hollywood’s biggest A-Lister’s who ever lived.

His movies have sold more tickets and made more money than any other actor in movie history.

Harrison’s road to success was the farthest thing from easy, and people would be foolish to believe that acting is an easy road to fame and money.

A few lessons that I would like to take away from reading this book that can benefit aspiring actors are:
~It takes years to prove to someone that you are worthy of being renowned for your acting. It takes VERY hard work and dedication to succeed in the movie/show business, including facing one rejection after another and still having the courage to continue to audition while perfecting your craft.

~You must want to act because you LOVE acting, and not because you want fame and money. VERY few actors, unless they are very lucky, ever get A-list status, or even make enough to live on. When Harrison first started pursuing acting, he was broke, rejected and struggled to find enough money to pay mortgage and feed his family.

~Sometimes you have to be picky with what projects you choose to take part in. For example, when Harrison was starting out, although broke and out of work, he did not take part in projects that could undermine his reputation as someone who is serious. He did not take part in commercial acting, although it paid good money, because he believed that doing so would prevent the serious movie people from taking him seriously.

~The completed project that you think will fail might end up being a hit with the public.

~Those who are worthy of fame are usually the ones who do not want the fame/media attention. In the book, he said that “being normal is kind of a victory”. The only time he wanted to be covered by the press was when he had a movie to sell, but not any other time.

~You should only contribute to charities because you genuinely care and want to help. Although Harrison Ford donated millions of dollars to worthy causes, he did NOT use his philanthropy as a publicity stunt. In fact, he kept quiet about it.

If you would like your own copy of Harrison Ford: Imperfect Hero, you can purchase it HERE

Some quotes from the book that I liked:
“My job is not to show you that the character and I have something in common. My job is to show you that you and the character-even one who may seem a little crazy-have something in common”-Harrison Ford to American critic Gene Siskel (pg. 250).

“He is very strong; he has a lot of determination and doesn’t quit”-Steinfeld said [about Harrison Ford] (pg. 264).

“The only reasonable place to be a movie star is on the set where you can use it to control your own destiny, and that’s its only use”-Harrison Ford(pg. 316)

Of course, there are many, many more, but I won’t completely ruin the book for you.

Happy Reading!

L’Oreal Paris Natural Match Hair Colour Review

If you are considering colouring your hair, I hope that this review will be useful for you.

A few days ago, I went dark (photos of the new hair coming soon) because a recent catalogue shoot called for a darker colour. My hair was blonde before.

Since I have never coloured my own hair (I went to salons) before, I was not sure how my dye job was going to turn out. I was a little worried that I was going to miss strands of blonde hair and that the colour will somehow be off. A bad dye job does not look good, and women should not have to deal with it. If you’ve had a bad dye job, you know exactly what that’s like, and it’s not fun.

So, I went to Shopper’s Drug Mart, and the lady at the counter recommended me L’Oreal Natural Match, Medium Brown, 5N Natural. Let’s just say, it was a wise choice for me to ask her for a recommendation because that colour WORKS. Not only did it cover every strand of blonde hair that I had, but also it was very easy to apply (even for a newbie, like myself). I would highly recommend it to anyone who is considering colouring their hair.

The instruction that came in the box were super easy to follow. After this experience with L’Oreal Natural Match, I will certainly try their other colours when asked to colour my hair a different colour. You can buy theL’Oreal Natural Match on Amazon for about 1/3 of what I paid for it (which is still about 1/10th of what you’d pay at a salon).

Image found on the Internet, but it’s the same box that I have.

What colour would you like to dye your hair (name your favorite products)?

Plum Clothing, Victoria BC-Review and Farewell

A few days ago, I read in the Times Colonist that Plum Clothing on Broad and Yates in Victoria is closing. The store has been in the city for 15 years, and unfortunately their lease has ended and they are not renewing it.

From my experience of going shopping there, I was always greeted by friendly, service-oriented associates who did a great job. They know fashion and they know quality.

Although the prices were a bit on the higher end, the clothing was definitely worth it. The majority of Plum clothing is manufactured in Vancouver, and to me it makes perfect sense to support local businesses, even if that means paying a little bit more for clothing that lasts.

When we buy clothes, we invest in ourselves, because clothing looks better when it is well-made.

I would like to wish the owners of Plum all the best in the future, and I hope that one day the store will be back in Victoria.

Take a look at their website and see the kind of stylish outfits they sell.

Shopping at RW & Co.

A few weeks ago, I went to RW & Co in the Mayfair Mall and I bought a suit, which consists of a business jacket and dress pants.

RW & Co sells various clothing items, from stylish outerwear, to suits, to office dresses to casual wear. The clothing is well-made, and generally looks good.

I find that prices are pretty reasonable at RW & Co. For example, the suit that I bought was only about $160, which is the price that some places charge for just a jacket.

However, if you are a very small lady, then you should go a size down when trying on clothes at RW & Co. A size 4 at RW & Co would fit a person who normally takes a size 6.

I will post photos soon 🙂

Always August Tanning, Victoria, BC: Featured Business

I have been a customer at Always August Tanning for about a year. Although I am not a huge tanner, I can definitely say that Always August has everything that a tanning salon needs.

Every time I came into the salon after booking my appointment, I always had friendly and knowledgeable staff greeting me and letting me know that my tanning bed is ready for me to use.

All staff at Always August Tanning are all Smart Tan certified, so be assured that you are in safe hands.

Also, what I like about Always August is that when I first walked in, I did not have a high pressure sales person trying to sell me the most expensive package. Instead, I got the best deal possible with my student discount. Being a student, I am very picky about how I spend money, but I like Always August, and I will be a returning customer.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Melanie Neumann, the owner of Always August Tanning, while I was passing time before my appointment.

AVIVA:How long has Always August Tanning been in business?
MELANIE NEUMANN:
Two years in October of 2010

AVIVA:What do you believe sets you apart from other tanning salons?
MN:
Our business model is based upon all the things that I was looking for in a tanning salon. I have a customer service background and I like to give customers what they want. I believe it is important to keep customers satisfied and I will go out of my way to do so. I base my whole business on looking at it through the customers’ eyes.

AVIVA: What are your prices like and what kinds of specials do you offer?
MN:
Our prices are about average/middle ground. We are not the cheapest, but at the same time affordable. There are discounts for students, mall staff, and ongoing monthly specials that are different every month.

AVIVA: What other products and services do you offer to your customers?
MN:
Spray tanning, airbrush (no UV rays), tanning accessories, UV tooth whitening, and everything else that’s related to tanning.

I would like to thank Melanie for her time in answering my questions about her salon.

If you would like to visit Always August Tanning and check out the products and tanning beds, it is:
Located at University Heights Mall at the main entrance.
